Overview
Research by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) (2022) states five percent of pregnant women use one or more addictive substances. This session explores how to create an effective treatment plan and the necessary prescribing of MAT for this special population in addiction treatment. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a strategy used in behavioral health. According to Satre et al., (2016), “MI is a short-term, directive, patient-centered style of counseling to help explore and resolve ambivalence” (p. 2). The technique when used effectively is non-judgmental and assist patience to achieve a higher degree of readiness to change (Stare et al., 2016). This session provides techniques for crucial conversations to discuss addiction with patients and create and welcoming environment to discuss motivation for change. Buprenorphine is a form of medication assisted treatment (MAT). MAT is The use of medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a whole-patient approach to the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2022). With changes to prescribing this medication, many organizations are still working to create policies and structures to promote this programing for patients. This session explores the lessons learned from Premier with the implementation of their Self-Start Buprenorphine program. This session with a pharmacist and provider, explores the pharmacology and treatment modalities for acute pain in the setting of OUD.
