Health Equity Rounds Curriculum and Case: Trust in the Patient-Provider Relationship

As healthcare professionals, knowing how to cultivate and develop trust between a practitioner and patient is of paramount importance. Not only does it result in a better experience overall for both parties, but it also undoubtedly improves health outcomes for patients and decreases rates of burnout for practitioners. Trust in the Patient-Provider Relationship is a 2-hour faculty development session in which participants learn what goes into creating that all-important foundation of trust with patients from all walks of life. The first hour is composed of starting with trust being defined as it relates specifically to the healthcare setting, describing facilitators of trust, discussing threats to the establishment of trust, reflecting on what personal drivers of trust are, and finally discussing specific strategies to foster trust with our patients. The second hour is a real-world clinical vignette that depicts a loss of trust in a patient-provider relationship and allows time for individual and group reflection on where the loss of trust took place, how it could be prevented in the future, and how to fix it once it has happened.

Wright State University (WSU) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. WSU designated this CME activity for a maximum of 2.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
