Overview
Acquired brain injuries (ABI) affect individuals across the lifespan and often result in complex, long-term physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. Effective support requires coordinated, interdisciplinary approaches that address the whole person across healthcare, rehabilitation, education, and community settings. This symposium will explore integrated, research-informed models of care for individuals with acquired brain injuries, emphasizing collaboration across disciplines to improve outcomes and quality of life. Participants will gain knowledge of best practices, emerging research, and practical strategies for delivering holistic, person-centered care. This course is appropriate for physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, mental health practitioners, social workers, educators, students in related fields, and community members impacted by brain injury and their families.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify systemic, cultural, and service-delivery barriers to care for individuals with acquired brain injury across healthcare, military, educational, and community settings.
  2. Explain how stigma, misinformation, and under-recognition (e.g., in domestic violence, sport, and aging populations) contribute to delayed diagnosis, fragmented care, and unmet needs following brain injury.
  3. Describe long-term physical, cognitive, psychological, and social impacts of ABI on individuals and families, including implications for community integration, employment, and quality of life.
  4. Apply evidence-based and emerging strategies for prevention (e.g., fall-related TBI in older adults), assessment (including advanced neuroimaging and brain mapping), and interdisciplinary rehabilitation planning.
  5. Develop integrated, person-centered care plans that incorporate physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and environmental interventions, including vocational recovery, inclusive educational practices, and supports for survivors of violence and those with communication disorders such as aphasia.
  6. Utilize trauma-informed, inclusive, and strengths-based approaches to collaborate with survivors, care partners, and interdisciplinary teams in order to promote dignity, resilience, and meaningful participation in home, work, school, and community life.
