Overview

Hand Therapy for OT is a rehab CEU course conducted by Premier Health. It combines an online component via Healthstreams and an in-person component. The topic for this session is: A Management and Resolution Method for the Chronically Stiff Hand utilizing Casting Motion to Mobilize Stiffness (CMMS).

CMMS as a technique was developed by Judy Colditz OTR/L CHT FAOTA that uses Plaster for Paris (POP) applied thoughtfully to emerging or presently stiff hands in instances in which traditional hand therapy is not working, or a general lack of measurable progress is occurring in composite fisting. The CMMS technique involves the application of a nonremovable Plaster of Paris (POP) cast that selectively immobilizes proximal joints in an ideal position to recapture lost motion while constraining distal joints to direct desired motion over a prolonged period. CMMS involves the active redirection of hand motion to reduce hand stiffness. The CMMS casting technique aims to simultaneously reduce edema, address Intrinsic/interossei shortening, mobilize stiff joint capsular patterns, and promote and normalize cortical fisting patterns. It is the method of choice when decreased visit limits are a concern, patient monetary/transportation issues are concerns, and for a more rural patient populations unable to continuously frequent your hand clinic, that are dealing with a chronically stiff hand or a newly emergent stiff hand.

Accreditation
This course is pending 12.0 CEU contact hours (5 hours online and 7 hours lab) by the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA).
