The Chair Development Series is a structured, interactive program designed to equip current and aspiring medical school department chairs with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to lead effectively in today’s complex academic health environment. Participants explore core domains of departmental leadership including faculty affairs, promotion and tenure, fiscal stewardship, academic program oversight, clinical partnerships, and learner support. The series emphasizes the unique responsibilities of medical school chairs, balancing institutional missions with the needs of faculty, staff, students, and affiliated health systems. Sessions combine expert presentations, case discussions, and peer dialogue to foster practical strategies and collaborative problem-solving. Topics include strategic planning, navigating accreditation requirements, conflict resolution, advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, supporting faculty development, and aligning departmental activities with broader institutional goals. Participants receive tailored guidance on managing faculty evaluations, mentoring junior faculty, ensuring compliance with LCME standards, and strengthening research and clinical enterprises. Attention is also given to cultivating wellness, resilience, and inclusive leadership practices that sustain long-term success in high-demand roles. By the conclusion of the series, chairs will have a deeper understanding of their roles as institutional stewards, equipped with actionable tools for leading academic and clinical teams. The program not only builds individual leadership capacity but also strengthens cross-departmental collaboration, advancing the medical school’s collective mission of excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community engagement.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of LCME accreditation standards relevant to departmental leadership (Element 4.4, 4.5, 9.4, etc.).
2. Apply leadership skills in managing faculty recruitment, mentoring, promotion, and annual evaluations.
3. Implement strategies to align departmental goals with the school’s strategic plan.
4. Adopt evidence-based practices in faculty development, wellness promotion, and inclusive leadership.

Wright State University (WSU) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. WSU designated this CME activity for a maximum of 10.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received in writing no less than 20 days before the course will be refunded, less a 20% administrative fee. No refunds will be made on cancellations received after that date. Please send cancellation requests to [email protected].

Premier Health-Wright State CME Alliance reserves the right to cancel or postpone this program if necessary; in the event of cancellation, course fees will be fully refunded. We are not responsible for other costs incurred such as non-refundable airline tickets or hotel penalties.
